According to the latest report by the World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA), which brings together the apple and pear producing countries of the world, the amount of apples stored in European warehouses is still 7% higher than in the same period last year. According to FruitVeB Hungarian Interprofessional Organization and Product Council (FruitVeB), the situation in Belarus currently has the greatest impact on European markets. According to the president of WAPA, the most important task of the organization is to achieve an increase in consumption.
According to the latest WAPA report, the volume of apples placed in European warehouses on February 1 was 3.607 million tons, an increase of 7% over the same period in 2021. There are 408 thousand tons of pears in warehouses, which is 30% less than last year – Read FruitVeB the side. Philip BenardAccording to the head of the organization, the European markets are currently the most affected by the situation in Belarus, and this will not be the case in the future. Because of large stocks, every effort must be made to increase consumption. In the United States, apple stocks fell 1% to 1.478 million tons compared to a year ago, while pears rose 32% to 149.5,000 tons.
At its last meeting, WAPA focused on yield estimates for the Southern Hemisphere, forecasting a 7% decline for apples and 6% for pears compared to 2021. Higher freight costs, a shortage of reefer containers, higher production costs and geopolitical uncertainties are expected to drive down exports this year.
For apples, the largest producers in the Southern Hemisphere are expected to be 4.864 million tons. In 2021, it was 5.217 million tons. The decline is mainly due to lower yields in Brazil (-30%) and Argentina (-11%). But a slight decrease is also expected in Australia (-3%) and Chile (-2%). In contrast, New Zealand and South Africa are expected to increase production (15% and 4%, respectively). Chile is expected to remain the largest producer of apples in the southern hemisphere with 1.455 million tons, followed by South Africa with 1.163 million tons, Brazil with 900 thousand tons, New Zealand with 590 thousand tons, Argentina with 445 thousand tons, Australia with 311 thousand tons. With 1.706 million tons, Gala remains the most popular species, although the total yield is expected to decrease by 7% compared to 2021. Despite the decrease in yield, exports are expected to increase slightly by 1,744 tons.
In the case of pears, producers in the Southern Hemisphere expect yields to drop to 1.229 million tons, mainly due to lower volumes in Argentina (-13%), Chile (-11%) and Australia (-6%). As with apples, New Zealand and South Africa are expected to increase production by 31% and 5%, respectively. The largest producer in the Southern Hemisphere is still Argentina with 522 thousand tons, followed by South Africa with 492 tons, Chile with 122 thousand tons, Australia with 81 thousand tons and New Zealand with 11 thousand tons. Packham’s Triumph remains the largest, at 444,000 tons, although its volume is down 4% as of 2021, followed by Williams bon chrétien at 306,000 tons. Export figures are expected to decline by 6% compared to 2021 to a total of 641,207 thousand tons, mainly due to a 14% decrease in Argentine exports.
