F1 Event Guide: Round 12 Hungary

by Thomas Miles

With Red Bull making history and one of Australia’s most successful Formula 1 drivers returning to the grid, there is a lot of excitement around the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Daniel Ricciardo returns to Australia after 10 races to give two local champions a late night cheer.

The ‘Honey Badger’ had planned to spend the entire 2023 season in F1 as the third Red Bull driver after his stint at McLaren ended a year ago.

However, he was ruled out of the Albadari session two weeks before the summer break after Nike de Vries was docked for poor performance.

Daniel Ricciardo beats Fernando Alonso for the lead at the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix.

This exciting development has created a lot of excitement around the world and all eyes will be on Ricciardo to see if he can restore the magic.

With AlphaTauri last in the Australian championship and a points deficit in the last five races, it wouldn’t be easy to jump to the slowest car on the grid.

Despite not racing this year, Ricciardo’s 11 and a half years of experience will help the team emerge from its current situation.

Budapest is a special place to return to for Ricciardo, after he scored one of his most famous wins in 2014 when he moved from third to pole over the last five rounds.

While many wonder how Ricciardo will fare, the veteran Red Bull team is on the brink of history.

A win in Hungary would level the record books with Red Bull rewriting McLaren for the most consecutive victories.

Christian Horners has won 11 races since last season’s final in Abu Dhabi.

The form guide suggests there will be few hurdles to Max Verstappen’s achievement as he overcomes McLaren’s early concerns at Silverstone by winning the last six championships.

Last year was another great example of how hard it can be for the Dutch driver to win after landing tenth, spinning and winning by seven seconds.

On the other side of the garage, pressure is building on Sergio Perez to improve his one-lap pace, which hasn’t reached Q3 since taking pole in Miami.

McLaren’s battle to retire a rookie is looking as exciting as ever after the exciting pace at Silverstone.

Lando Norris and Oscar Biaster battled at the front and only a poorly timed safety car put the Australian rookie’s Dream Girls on the podium.

Biaster will be armed with a new forward team, to which Norris had exclusive rights in Hungary.

Mercedes followed suit, with Lewis Hamilton on the podium again at home, while Aston Martin and Ferrari need to pick up the pace after defeat two weeks ago.

Hunari has a new rule that teams can only use hards in Q1, mediums in Q2 and softs in the third quarter.

With a Red Bull chase, Ricciardo’s redemption and Piastre’s podium, there’s a lot to expect at the Hungaroring, which has boosted classic racing in the past decade.
