Eurostar’s fastest growing intercity service is the service from Amsterdam via Rotterdam to London.
However, from the middle of next year, it will no longer be possible to board trains in the Netherlands, and between June 2024 and January 2025, London-bound passengers will only be picked up in Brussels, which will therefore leave Amsterdam empty.
The reason is completely normal. Once the renovation of Amsterdam Central Station begins, the station will not have enough space to carry London-bound passengers with too much administration.
Negotiations between Eurostar, Dutch Railways, the Dutch infrastructure provider ProRail and the Dutch government have been ongoing for several months, but as Dutch Railways has announced, they have unfortunately come to the conclusion that despite all efforts, there will be a period in which there will be no departures from Amsterdam by direct train to London.
“This is also very sad because we have worked hard over the past few years to make the Eurostar service to London an attractive alternative to flying. However, this is a particularly difficult situation to resolve. If there had been a simple solution we would have grabbed it with both hands. Unfortunately, after looking at the problem, “It seems that this simple solution does not exist.” – The railway company said.
Construction of the large new station will be completed in January 2025, after which more passengers will be able to board trains in Amsterdam to travel to London without needing a transfer service. However, until then, travelers from Amsterdam and Rotterdam to London will have to transfer in Brussels. Departures from London can continue to travel to both Dutch cities without interruption.
Eurostar may soon have a new competitor, and passengers departing from Central Europe will be able to join Western European traffic with these trains.
