The 34-year-old missed five races after fracturing his metacarpal bone during practice for the Dutch Grand Prix on August 25. During his recovery, New Zealander Liam Lawson replaced him in the subsidiary team of the defending world champion Red Bull stable, effectively: he finished as the points scorer in his third Formula 1 race and performed well overall.
Ricciardo attended the Red Bull event in Nashville last weekend and will now compete in the US Grand Prix in Austin on Friday.
It was decided a month ago that Ricciardo and Japanese Juki Konoda would drive AlphaTauri race cars in next year’s Formula 1 season as well, while Lawson would remain the test and reserve driver.
Ricciardo started the current season as a test driver and reserve driver for Red Bull, but before the summer break he replaced Dutchman Nick de Vries, who was sacked due to poor results.
