On Sunday, the Swedish government condemned the burning of the Koran in Stockholm, calling it anti-Islamic, MTI wrote.
“The government fully understands that the anti-Islamic actions of some in the demonstrations in Sweden may be considered an insult by Muslims. We strongly condemn these actions, which in no way reflect the views of the Swedish government,” the Swedish Foreign Ministry said.
“Burning the Qur’an or any other sacred text is an offensive, disrespectful act and a clear provocation. Racism, xenophobia and intolerance have no place either in Sweden or in Europe.”
At the same time, the Diplomatic Ministry confirmed that freedom of expression, assembly and demonstration enjoyed constitutional protection in Sweden.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which includes 57 countries, during an extraordinary meeting held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, called for action against the desecration of the Holy Book among Muslims.
In central Stockholm, Sloane Momica, a 37-year-old Iraqi immigrant, tore pages from Islam’s holy book and set them on fire on Wednesday. He had previously placed bacon on the Qur’an, a gesture that deeply offended believers. Momica was later prosecuted for “inciting against a racial or national group” and violating the fire ban, but the police allowed her to move beforehand.
The burning of the Qur’an was widely condemned by the international community, and protests erupted in Iraq and Iran.
