Frank Lampard is the surprise candidate for the Canada job

Frank Lampard is a surprise candidate to become the new coach of the Canadian national team.

The Canadian Football Association has placed Lampard on a short list of coaches to take charge and lead the national team in the 2026 World Cup, which they are co-hosting.

Lampard has been out of work since his term as Chelsea's caretaker manager ended at the end of last season, and it is understood Canada would like to hold talks with him.

The former Chelsea midfielder was seen watching England's national team training ahead of last month's friendly matches against Brazil and Belgium.

Lampard wants to return to management but has been waiting for the right opportunity and it remains to be seen whether the Canada job is attractive to him.

Canada currently has an interim head coach, Mauro Bello, who was an assistant to John Herdman, who stepped down last summer to take over at Toronto FC.

Lampard spent a year in America at the end of his playing career with New York City FC, but has never coached abroad.

After leading Derby County to the Championship play-offs in his first job in management, Lampard achieved Champions League qualification and reached the FA Cup final as Chelsea's permanent head coach.

He then guided Everton to safety in the Premier League before being sacked last season, when he finished the season as Chelsea's caretaker coach.

Lampard has since been spotted at a Chelsea game and has been preparing for his return to work while also spending time with his family.

“I'm enjoying being with my family and I'm looking forward to returning at some stage,” Lampard said. “I hope something comes along that feels right for me, I'm keen to get back to work again but as I reiterate, I'm enjoying family life.

“It's a hard job, so when you get out of it, it's nice to appreciate being around all my kids.

“You love the job. You understand the rigors of it in the modern era. I've enjoyed all the clubs I've worked with. They've all been big challenges for different reasons. I enjoy working with the players, improving the players and the team, so let's see what comes.”
