Researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution came up with the idea that they would pour about 25,000 liters (6,600 gallons) of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) into inside the ocean Off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to slow climate change. Yes, industrial amounts of lye could stop the environmental catastrophe, according to these scientists.
The idea is simple: by dumping highly potent compounds into the oceans, they increase the natural ability of the water to absorb carbon dioxide and initiate the process of ocean alkalization (OAE). In theory, this could be suitable for sequestering more carbon dioxide from the air directly above the water, thus improving the composition of the air.

It’s one of several ideas to slow climate change that have received a mixed reception, to say the least. It’s not certain that the unusual plan will eventually come to fruition, and the scientists are expected to face fierce resistance from local lawmakers, environmental activists and fishermen.
Woods Hole researcher Dan McCorkle said the use of caustic soda would not have any long-term negative impact on marine life, and the method was designed to be environmentally friendly. He added that they would not even consider trying this method if they saw that it would have a harmful effect on aquatic life.
Researchers at the institute and proponents of the OAE method argue that when Carbon Dioxide It dissolves in the ocean, and carbonic acid is produced, which is very harmful to the environment – which is why strong alkalis must be poured into the ocean in order to stop or at least slow down the process.
Climate change is already threatening the next Olympic Games.

McCorkle and his colleagues have already applied for a federal permit from the Environmental Protection Agency, and in the long term they hope to conduct the experiment in the Gulf of Maine. The scientist says action must be taken now before it’s too late:
“We see that we are unable or unwilling to abandon burning fossil fuels, which we should do, but at the same time we have to start studying whether these methods help sequester carbon from our atmosphere at all.”
Of course, opponents of the idea have already begun to form a coalition, and according to many interested parties, stronger arguments are needed to pour thousands of liters of liquid lye into the ocean. It is a big question whether this can be achieved at all, but if it is achieved and succeeds, it will be a global sensation, and could also play a role in saving the Earth.
