The Canadian women’s national goalball team is the new American champion, and for this reason, it also qualified for Paris 2024 with the continental title under its belt.
It was a very balanced and dramatic final with the USA, and it was the team managed by Trent Fairbrother that remained calm the longest and most determined throughout the match.
Emma Lee Reinke was Canada’s star in the final, scoring three of the four goals that earned the team the title and stamped Canada’s passport to the upcoming Paralympics in France next year.
“This was a dream come true! The United States was a difficult opponent, but after the first two goals, we started to feel more confident, especially after what happened in the first match in the tournament, in which we lost to the United States with mistakes that we only blame ourselves for,” said Emma, the top scorer. To the Canadian team: “We corrected that, and here we are celebrating the gold medal and qualifying for Paris.”
In deciding the bronze match, Brazil beat Argentina by the maximum possible difference in goalball (10-0), with five goals from Daniele Villas Longini, three from Muniza de Lima, and the other two goals from Jessica Vitorino and Katia Ferreira.
