Android users who have always envied Samsung's Secure Folder for creating a locked and private space on their devices can now rejoice. Google has officially announced the launch of “Private Space” in Android 15, a native feature that provides an additional layer of security for sensitive apps and data.
Private Space will act as a separate, secure environment within your phone and can only be accessed with additional authentication. It allows you to isolate apps such as health trackers or banking apps, protecting their data and notifications from prying eyes. Google places great emphasis on direct integration into the operating system, providing reliable protection for your confidential information.
While we haven't seen the final version of Private Space in action yet, we have seen it running on the Android 14 QPR3 beta, which gives you a good idea of how it works.
Setting up privacy involves going to “Security & Privacy” in your device settings and tapping “Privacy.” The setup process requires authentication so only the root user can set it up. Users will be able to link a Google account to easily download apps within the private space.
Once set up, the private space can be found in the app drawer, labeled “Private” and marked with a lock icon. Access will require setting a dedicated screen lock for this space. You can fill the space with pre-loaded apps like Google Camera and Chrome, or add more from the Play Store.
While using apps inside Private Space, a lock icon on the status bar reminds users of the secure environment. Users can customize the visibility of notifications for apps within Private Space and even set Private Space to automatically hide when locked.
