One of the most significant updates on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 compared to the Z Flip4 is the larger external display – which grows from 1.9 inches (512 x 260 pixels) to 3.4 inches (720 x 748 pixels). It makes it possible for Samsung to do this. Run applications on it, not just basic tools.
The company is said to have partnered with Google to allow apps like Google Maps to use the screen. It’s not currently clear how much mapping functionality will be available when the phone is locked — it could be the full app (like the Moto Razr40 Ultra), or it could just be a stripped-down version.
The Maps UI on the Razr had issues because it didn’t avoid camera holes. This will also be an issue with the Galaxy Z Flip5 and its folder-shaped screen.
Otherwise, other Google apps can be accessed from the external screen, including Messages and YouTube. Of course, Samsung would logically bring several One UI apps to this screen as well. It probably won’t be as functional as the Cover Screen on the Galaxy Z Fold5, but the new 3.4-inch panel will mean you’ll have to open the phone more often.
The official unveiling will take place on July 26.
