Google unveiled Project Astra at I/O 2024 in May, which focuses on future applications of artificial intelligence, with Gemini Live expected “later this year.” CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the importance of Project Astra during a recent earnings call, emphasizing that Google wants to build experiences where AI can interpret the world around us.
Project Astra is a flash of future possibilities, and Google is already working to bring these experiences to life by 2025. However, it's currently unclear whether Gemini Live's camera mode will be pushed to 2025, or whether potential availability this year will be It is more limited, with a wider rollout not expected until next year. The Astra project includes multiple uses for products, and Google plans to introduce the new technology to both phones and smart glasses.
Gemini Live is now live for all users and is limited to informational chats. It does not currently support Gemini extensions and access to Gmail and Google Calendar, but Gemini features are expected to expand in the future. Pichai said Google teams are constantly working to improve performance and introduce new capabilities to Gemini models, including Gemini 2.0, which is expected to debut in December.
Google products such as Gmail, Android, Maps, Chrome, Play Store and YouTube are already releasing their first versions with Gemini integration, indicating that the roadmap is ambitious and further improvements are expected by 2025. In Alphabet's Q3 earnings report, it was also said that there is strong demand for Pixel 9 series. The latest Pixel 9 line, featuring advanced AI models including the Gemini Nano, has won numerous awards.
