The increase in smartphone size has posed an increasing challenge to Corning, the maker of Gorilla Glass, over the years. The larger the mobile phone, the more force it will experience when it is dropped. In order to be able to protect increasingly large devices, the company has had to constantly evolve its toughened glass, the latest generation of which has now arrived, Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
New glass should not only withstand scratches, but also protect against falls. The damage caused by falling mainly depends on the surface on which the device lands. At home, on the carpet, you can expect much less damage than outside on the asphalt.
And only concrete is worse than asphalt. The latest generation of Gorilla Glass is designed to effectively protect smartphones in the event of unpleasant encounters with concrete. The smoother the surface, the less damage it causes to the equipment, but concrete is much coarser and more granular than asphalt, which means hitting the surface is more dangerous.
The result of Corning’s work was Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which, according to the manufacturer’s promise, can withstand drops up to 1 meter, even if the device falls on concrete. In the case of asphalt, the height itself can reach two meters, which means that a smartphone with new glass can withstand falls that start from head height.
The development of glass encountered its difficulties, and the biggest challenge was the previously mentioned increase in size, which can be said to be common in today’s mobile phone world. According to Corning, today’s average smartphone is 10 percent larger and 15 percent heavier than it was four years ago. The bigger and heavier it is, the more it falls and knocks.
When developing Gorilla Glass Victus 2, it was not only necessary to ensure that the glass would survive without breaking, it also had to remain protected from scratches. Things are further complicated by the fact that many devices have a so-called “glass sandwich” design, that is, not just the front part, but the back part is covered with a layer of glass. Even when the first generation Victus was created, the manufacturer believed that it would protect equally well from falls and scratches.
The first smartphones with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection are expected to be launched in the coming months. Corning hasn’t revealed which manufacturers’ devices that will be, but they do have a general list of all phones with Gorilla Glass Victus coating. The new paint will likely be given to their sequels, starting with the Galaxy S23 series.
