Among the H-Moto UNI Győr riders, Kevin Farkas in the Red Bull Rookies Cup at Spielberg and Bálint Kovács in IDM completed an encouraging weekend despite both falling.
Last year, the H-Moto UNI Győr team had a very successful year, which has now expanded into 2024, with Kevin Farkas, second in the Northen Talent Cup series in 2022, also joining the team, which is supported by the Hungarian Motorsport Academy (HUMDA), meaning that it needs to focus exclusively on preparation and competition.
17-year-old Kevin Farkas is pushing the limits among the rookies this year, completing his fifth race weekend in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, a MotoGP race. He had already scored points at Assen, and this time at the Red Bull Ring he was hoping to increase his points tally once again.
During free practice, Kevin's primary goal was to get used to his bike after the long summer break, while also getting his pace up in qualifying, so that he could wait for the races with a realistic chance of scoring points by securing a 15th starting grid spot. He finished 11th with a great performance in the first, while failing in the second, but overall he already has 11 points to his name, putting him in 18th.
“My first race went really well, although I dropped six places after the start. At the same time, my race pace was also very good, as I was able to set lap times like my rival who won the race, in fact, I had the best lap time until the last lap. I was so happy that everything finally came together that I carried the Hungarian flag around the field after the wave.”
“But the second match didn’t go as planned. The first laps went well, but when I wanted to overtake again, one of my rivals closed the gate in front of me and I fell. “There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s part of the competition, but it really bothers me that it’s happened to me for the third time this year,” said HMA competitor Kevin Farkas, who is 18th overall with 11 points and awaits the sequel that will take place in two weeks in Aragon.
Meanwhile, Balint Kovacs, after finishing eighth overall as a rookie last year, will once again start this year in the very strong German championship. This time, the 22-year-old motorcyclist continued his form this year on the famous track in Assen during the fifth race weekend in the IDM. Balint excelled in free practice, taking third and then second for the first time on wet asphalt, and reached the Superpole in seventh, where he managed to secure the tenth starting point. His pace was competitive with the best throughout, so he was looking forward to the races with confidence.
In the first race on Sunday, he had a big fight with two other riders who fell right in front of him, and unfortunately the Hungarian rider was not able to save the situation either, and he fell too. But he managed to get back into the race and finish. In the second race, things were much better, and with a great performance he finished the race in sixth place, and with these 10 additional points, he is now in eighth place overall, with 82 points earned so far.
“We had a positive end to the day on Friday, although the weather wasn’t kind to us, because two free practice sessions were in wet conditions, but I really enjoyed them, which was also reflected in the result,” he added. “Based on last year’s and this year’s experience, we created the perfect setup, which turned out to be good. I completed the best times for the third and second sessions in free practice, while I was seventh in the preliminary practice for the Superpole. We moved in the right direction in qualifying on Saturday, but I made a mistake on the fast lap and in such a tight championship, that doesn’t fit. The team said that tenth place on the start is not bad, and I was confident with my good pace in the race.”
“There were a lot of slippages in the morning race on Sunday, which I was unfortunately also a part of. I was third in a three-way race, but the first two competitors failed. Since we were riding on the border in the first place, they fell very close to me, and I had no escape route, and I fell too. However, I took the bike to the finish line. But the afternoon race went very well and made up for everything. I started from ninth, dictated a great pace throughout, the settings worked perfectly and by the tenth lap I had made my way to sixth, reaching the finish line just eight seconds behind the winner and four seconds behind second. “Podium,” said Balint Kovacs, who will finish sixth in the IDM race at the Nürburgring.
