Speaking to the press, Haniyeh condemned the recent aggression by Israeli settlers, explaining the launch of the operation by saying that the Palestinians are “victims of the Zionist aggression.” Haniyeh called on Muslims around the world to play an active role in this struggle.
Meanwhile, according to Israeli media reports, fighting is already taking place in the West Bank, but the army has not yet confirmed the attacks.
Haniyeh claimed that Israel continues to oppress the Palestinians, including the ongoing blockade of the Gaza Strip, the expansion of areas that can be occupied by settlers, and the continued aggression in the West Bank.
The announcement of “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood” came after hundreds of rockets were launched from Gaza towards areas under Israeli control. Muhammad Deif, Chief of Staff of the Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas movement, issued a statement condemning the crimes of the Israeli occupation against civilians and the desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque.
Battles are taking place in about twenty places with infiltrating Hamas fighters who, among other things, attacked an Israeli police station. The mayor of Szderot called on the residents of his town and its surroundings on television to remain behind the closed doors of their shelters and not to go out to the streets under any circumstances.
Defense Minister Yoav Galant ordered an immediate, large-scale mobilization of reserve forces. An organization called “Ahim Benesik”, meaning “Brothers in Arms”, protested the transformation of the legal system by refusing to serve in the reserves, and called on its members to enlist when called up. The organizers announced that the usual massive demonstration of 100,000 on Saturday evening, which is being held for the fortieth week against the transformation of the legal system, will not take place.
Although Saturday is an official holiday and a holiday for tents, the army spokesman called on religious people to turn on their radios and televisions to be aware of possible calls from security forces. Meanwhile, due to damage to the wires, power has been cut off in many places, and due to the ongoing missile attack, they are currently unable to restore service.
