Taro Yoko may get a chance to make a sequel to the best-selling NieR: Automata.
During the Nier London event, the franchise creator may have hinted at this. Although NieR has been an IP since the PlayStation 3 (originally starting out as a spin-off of another game, Drakengard), the success of NieR: Automata has made the series popular (and there's no better proof of that than sales of over 8 million). Taro's unusual and strange game design and writing style also played a big role in this. The series recently received an anime adaptation as well as written stories and concerts, leaving fans wondering when a new AAA game will be released that will either be a sequel to NieR: Automata or set in the game's universe. ?
Since NieR: Replicant was re-released in 2021, Taro has often said that he wants to make a new episode. However, after Replicant, he worked on other, smaller projects. He's worked on moblios RPGs, or the Voice of Cards series, for example. However, he couldn't forget NieR either, as a user named SanTheSly revealed on the ResetEra forum what was discussed at the London concert.
Along with Taro, Kiryu Takashi, the president of Square Enix, also appeared. Taro said on stage that if the audience wanted a sequel to NieR: Automata, they would give it the biggest ovation of the night yet. As this happened, the entire concert hall erupted in applause and cheers. This doesn't mean anything in itself, but throughout the show's history, the word repentance has often appeared in dialogue, but the last time it ended up being R3PENT. This is a reference to the lettered endings for NieR: Automata, and the number 3 may indicate that a third major NieR episode may be in the works.
Hopefully Square Enix is working on something, but since Taro worked with PlatinumGames on NieR: Automata, there may be some changes here.
