It’s almost unbelievable, but the Xbox Series X has reached the point where we can run Windows 98 on this machine today, and that also means we can also play PC games back then, in emulated form.
The DosBox Pure RetroArch kernel has received compatibility with Windows 98, and with this, many games have become available on the Xbox series, which so far can only be played on a PC. DosBox Pure also provides seamless 3DFx emulation through the Voodoo 2 system (Core contains the corresponding drivers).
By the way, Windows 98 must be installed on the Xbox through DosBox (can you still proceed?), and you can even print Office or Paint through the system.
But of course the fun doesn’t stop there. Turok, Wipeout, Quake 2, Command and Conquer, Unreal and many other fun games can be played from the device.
Games should be via FTP or ISO format in RetroArch and installed as we installed them on Windows back in the day.
The only problem is that the keyboard and mouse can only be controlled with a controller at the moment, but that usually works fine for FPS games, for example, according to the video. It’s also worth knowing that RetroArch solves everything from the CPU, so it’s possible that not all games will run perfectly. But if you choose to display the software instead of the 3DFx chip, the emulator can provide the capabilities of the 1 GHz PIII processor.
We will come to the topic of RetroArch later, because it also deserves a separate article. Did you know, for example, that today you don’t need a DEV MODE on your Xbox Series to run RetroArch on it?
In the meantime, it’s worth watching the video above, and maybe trying the attached method and opening your mouth.
