Hungary wins for the fourth time, a shocking surprise in the match between America and Ukraine

National team captain Péter Ács named the same team for the fourth round against Italy as he had against Austria the day before, so Ferenc Bercs was left out again. Sinan Sjogerov quickly gained a clear upper hand, and his opponent opted for a dragon version of the Sicilian defence. Our naturalized Russian Kalmyk quickly seized the initiative, and one serious mistake was enough to win the match.

Benjamin Gledora's match ended quickly as well, he didn't take any chances with the darkness, and a draw was enough.

Sjogerov and Gledora each scored three and a half points from four games at the Chess Olympiad.

Richard Rapport chose a strong opening (the Italian opening) and showed that he was also at home in positional play, exploiting the weaknesses of the dark center, and simplifying it into a hussar endgame with pawn advantage, which he of course won without any problems.

Peter Leko was also promising in the Italian opener, but in the dark at the start, then allowed the initiative to pass, fought for a long time for the equaliser, but one mistake was enough in the final and he lost.

The Hungarian men's team defeated Italy 2.5-1.5.

The paper model fell on the display floor.

Even without Hikaru Nakamura, the world number two, the United States started the Budapest Chess Olympiad as the top seed, with an impressively high team average of 2,757. Ukraine is only 15th in the preliminary rankings, but that is a bit misleading, Volokitin, Ivanchuk, Ponomarev and Korobov are also excellent chess players. Ivanchuk has already announced his retirement several times, but of course he is also playing in Budapest. After more than four hours of play, the United States was still ahead, but then Ivanchuk and Korobov turned the game in their favor and won.

Here are the pairings of the six Hungarian teams in Round 4.
