HWSW: Microsoft is testing ads in the Windows 11 Start menu

Developers will bombard Windows 11 users with promotions in a new location, but it's not yet certain that the new Start menu recommendations will be included in the stable builds, HWSW writes.

Microsoft has begun testing displaying ads in the Windows 11 Start menu, which the company says could lead users to “cool” apps available in the Microsoft Store. A small group of users can see app recommendations in a beta using Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.3495.

Promotions appear in the Recommended section of the Start menu among recently installed and frequently opened apps. Participants in the testing phase can turn off recommendations through Machine House in a menu that allows customization according to individual preferences.

This isn't the first time Redmond residents have experimented with inserting ads into one of the most commonly used Windows elements. In the fall of 2022, the company began promoting its own products, such as OneDrive, in drop-down menus. .

The good news is that European users are safe for now – More details at HWSW.
