UAW (United Auto Workers) It announced that it had reached a temporary agreement with Stellantis to put an end to the six-week strike.
This is the second attempt to reach an agreement that the union reached in negotiations with the three major auto giants, namely Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis. As we know, this strike has been ongoing for approximately two months to reach an agreement on renewing the labor contract, in which US President Biden also intervened and mainly supported the union demands. The strike, which, as we mention, led to the cessation of the activities of the various factories of the car manufacturing companies concerned.
Therefore, after reaching an agreement with Ford, the UAW also found an agreement with Stellantis. Automotive Group workers will now be able to return to work while the agreement goes through the ratification process between the two parties.
So what are the terms of the agreement reached? The agreement, very similar to the one reached with Ford, provides, among other things: a 25% pay increase (For the entire duration of the contract, i.e. until 2028), in addition to the possibility of making adjustments related to the cost of living. Although not all details are available, the immediate increase is expected to be approximately 11%.
The UAW said the company agreed to this Factory reopens in Belvidere, IllinoisWhich had closed on February 28, leaving 1,200 workers unemployed. Apparently, new generation pickup trucks will be built in-house. Nearby, Stellantis will also build a battery building factory. Additionally, it appears that factories in Trenton, Michigan, and Toledo, Ohio will not be closed.
However, the strike against General Motors continues.
