So far, the blame has been placed on the users.
03/07/2023 – Nvidia announced the RTX 3090 Ti at the beginning of 2022. The card, which also draws 450 watts on low audio, has already arrived with a new type of connector. Called 12VHPWR, the standard was intended to replace the previous 6 + 2-pin PCIe connectors and reduce the number of cables and connectors needed. On paper, the 12VHPWR can easily handle 600 watts, making it ideal for the new generation of flagship models.
Then, of course, reality showed otherwise. In the past year, several RTX 4090 and 4080 owners have reported that the connectors and video cards have started to smoke and burn. Moreover, in the recent period, a similar error phenomenon has already appeared with the power supply. Both Nvidia and PCI-SIG blamed the users, and based on their internal investigations, the improper connection caused a large portion of the errors.
It seems that everything can’t be fine, the second generation of connectors is coming!
According to information from Igor’s Lab, PCI-SIG, which is responsible for PCI standards, and Nvidia are working on a new connection. The updated version is called the 12V-2×6, which otherwise looks practically identical to the 12VHPWR. Fortunately, the interior is changing due to the need for more stringent standards than the second version. It is specified how much current the individual pins must withstand, and also under maximum load, they should not be more than 30 degrees warmer than the room/environment temperature. The great question is how effective the redesigned 12/16 pin connector actually is. We hope you can debut next year on the latest AMD, Intel or Nvidia products.
