Mojang, which is owned by Microsoft, released the video game Minecraft in 2011. With its distinctive pixelated style, Minecraft's theme offered players a unique experience in which they could build 3D worlds out of colorful blocks. In the past 13 years, it has gathered a huge fan base around it, with more than 140 million people playing it every month. Since its release, there have been several alternatives. Examples include Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Earth, Minecraft Dungeons, and Minecraft Legends.
The game has sold over 300 million copies, making it the second best-selling video game of all time, after Tetris.
Netflix is not the first attempt to bring the success of Minecraft to the screen. Warner Bros. plans to Legendary is also set to release a live-action film version, expected to hit theaters in the spring of 2025. Names like Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Daniel Brooks, and Emma Myers have been signed on to produce the Jared Hess-directed production.
According to Netflix, the upcoming animated series may focus on new characters and, like the yet-to-be-titled legendary film, shed new light on the world of Minecraft.
