WHO estimates for 2022 may include medical practitioners or all registered medical practitioners, depending on the source country.
Among European countries, Belgium, Georgia and Austria top the ranking. The Hungarians also precede the Bulgarians.
Among the South American countries, Uruguay and Argentina entered the top ten.
Meanwhile, eight African countries have less than one doctor per 10,000 people. According to the Africa Report, medical students from the continent move abroad to complete their studies but often do not return.
The Republic of Cape Verde, a small country made up of 10 islands off the coast of Africa, shows an outlier, with 44.6 doctors per 10,000 inhabitants. Since the country's independence in 1975, there has been significant progress in expanding health services. At the same time, life expectancy rose from 56 to 75 years, and the infant mortality rate fell from 108 to 15 per 1,000 births.
Among the G7 countries, Germany and Italy lead the way, with 42-45 doctors per 10,000 people. The United States, the United Kingdom, and France have the same ratio between 31 and 32. Japan and Canada have a much smaller number of 25 to 26 doctors per 10,000 residents.
