The Danish Ministry of Justice announced on Wednesday that starting next year, the government will restrict the display of flags of other countries on its territory at any time.
Denmark will limit the display of other countries' flags on its territory from 2025, according to an MTI report. Justice Minister Peter Hommelgaard wrote in the announcement that the restriction is necessary because the national flag is Denmark's most important national symbol.
He added that it was transparentForeign flags would not be banned on websites or advertising surfaces, for example at sporting events or demonstrations, so the draft law also includes a number of exceptions. Such an additional exception will be enjoyed by the flags of the Nordic countries, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Germany, as well as international and regional organizations. It will be possible to continue to use it freely, and the diplomatic missions of countries around the world in Denmark will be able to raise their flags on their embassy buildings without restrictions.
In Denmark, the issue of the use of foreign flags came to the fore after legal proceedings were initiated against a Danish citizen in 2023 for raising the national flag of the United States in his yard. The Danish Supreme Court ruled in his favor and ended the proceedings by canceling the decree prohibiting the use of foreign flags, which had been in effect since 1915. However, the Danish government did not agree with this decision, which is why it began drafting the draft law that is scheduled to be introduced soon.
According to the ministry's plans, the new regulations will enter into force on January 1, 2025, after Parliament's discussion and approval.
