Gabriel Attal previously held several positions in the French government, including Government Spokesman, Minister of Public Finance, and Minister of Education. He was a member of the Socialist Party at the beginning of his career, but later joined Emmanuel Macron's centrist party known as Ennahda.
He is France's youngest ever prime minister, at just 34 years old, and the first openly gay prime minister.
Elizabeth Bourne's resignation was preceded by recent political tensions over a controversial immigration law backed by Emmanuel Macron that would, among other things, strengthen the government's power to deport some foreigners.
The Prime Minister has been in office since May 2022.
By reorganizing the French government, President Emmanuel Macron's unstated goal is to give another impetus to his second presidential term, especially with regard to the upcoming European Parliament elections and the Summer Olympics to be held in Paris.
According to French media, hundreds of congratulatory messages have already arrived for the new Prime Minister.
