An unprecedented storm hit Zagreb and the eastern part of Croatia on Thursday. Severe weather killed four people. More than two thousand people were injured. Hurricane force winds arrived 180 kilometers per hour she says Contents.
During the summer months, storms are not without precedent in the neighborhood either, but Croats aren’t used to such inclement weather either.
Hurricanes can strike, too
According to climate researcher Branko Grisogon, a professor at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Zagreb, hurricanes may hit Croatia in the near future. The expert believes that the storm that claimed lives is most likely a direct result of climate change, but further investigations are needed to prove this.
The professor also said that yesterday’s storm is a precedent in Slavonia and the central part of Croatia, but in 2008 a similar storm hit Zagorje and Krapina on a larger scale, when a supercell cut down trees and tore roofs off houses.
These extreme weather phenomena cannot be called normal in any way. In Croatia, we cannot expect a tornado this week or this month, but it is certain that it will appear in the near future in late spring, summer or early autumn.
Gregoson said, adding that more and more extreme weather events are expected in Croatia.
