Since the application deadline expired at the end of June, more than 170,000 EU citizens have applied for a permanent residence permit in the UK, MTI said in a statement issued by the UK Home Office on Thursday. By the end of September, more than 6.2 million EU citizens had applied.

Britain withdrew from the European Union on January 31 last year. However, EU citizens who have legally and habitually settled in Britain by the end of 2020, at the end of an 11-month transition period after British EU membership ends, can still stay in the country, but they must apply for settled status. The Home Office said that in 52 percent of applications evaluated and approved by September 30, applicants were granted permanent status, and in 42 percent of cases, they were granted pre-specified status. They added that pre-determined status could be granted to those who arrived before 31 December 2020 with the intent to establish themselves but did not live beyond five years of life in the UK at the time of application.
