As reported by Index, the newest prison in Hungary, and indeed in Central Europe, is being built in Kissinger.
The high-tech smart prison, which includes 1,500 beds, will also contain a video analysis and location identification system. It seems that additional seats will be necessary, because they already exist Eurostat Hungary tops the list again.
Considering the number of prisoners per 100,000 capital, the prison population in 2022 was the highest in Hungary at 200 people. Meanwhile, 190 in Poland and 181 in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The lowest percentage was in Finland (52 people), the Netherlands (64 people) and Slovenia (65 people). According to Eurostat, the number of prisoners in the EU overall has also risen: in 2022, there were 483,593 prisoners in the EU, which equates to 108 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the figure recorded in 2021, when there were per 100,000 people. The number of prisoners was 106.
Prisons suffer from overcrowding in more than a third of European Union member states
In 2022, 11 of the 27 EU member states experienced overcrowding in prison cells.
Cyprus (226 places), France (119) and Belgium (118) witnessed the greatest overcrowding. The lowest occupancy rates were recorded in Malta (59), Estonia (62) and Latvia (67).
The prison utilization rate is the number of inmates relative to the formal capacity (planning capacity) of the prisons multiplied by one hundred. Oversaturation occurs when the occupancy rate exceeds 100, indicating that the prison has more inmates than it was designed to hold.
