Index – Abroad – The people of Transylvania were angered by the North Transylvania Highway bridge

In an open letter, residents of Magiarnadas (Nadaselo) in Transylvania object to the construction of a bridge on the North Transylvanian Highway over the village cemetery, Romanian newspaper Monitorul de Cluj wrote on Monday. In addition, they complain that they did not receive enough information, and that several hectares of their land were confiscated, but the bridge was not built over them.

People living in the Cluj County settlement, also inhabited by Hungarians, object to the fact that the national company managing Romanian road infrastructure (CNAIR) is modifying the previous route of the highway so that the bridge crosses the cemetery or passes over it – the newspaper relays their open letter on its website .

In an open letter signed by more than 200 local residents, they asked CNAIR to abandon the plan.

The petition was sent to the Romanian government, the People’s Advocate, the Cluj County Prefecture and Municipality, the municipality of the village center, Magyargorbo, and the Orthodox Diocese, MTI reported.

The problem is that the modified route will go no further than a few hundred meters from their homes, but they object to the fact that CNAIR is making changes after several hectares of farmland were seized and destroyed for construction work.

They also blame the fact that the national company did not inform the village community of the amendment.

They stress that they do not deny the need for the highway, but they demand that the authorities find another solution to build the bridge. It exposes the residents of the settlement to noise and air pollution, which is unacceptable from the point of view of current environmental protection.

They ask that work continue on the original path, that the cemetery not be disturbed, and that they be informed of its progress and dangers.

According to Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu, the 30-kilometre section connecting Magyarnadas with Magyarzombor (Zimbor) in Szilaje County is the most difficult section of the North Transylvanian Highway due to the risk of landslides. The economic portal Economedia.ro previously wrote that CNAIR decided to build a 1.2 km bridge in Magyarnádas and a 2 km bridge in Pusztopa (Topa Mica) to avoid critical sections.
