As written, the Marosvasareli Court annulled the fine protocol imposed by the Marosvasareli Unit of the Romanian Gendarmerie in its ruling announced on December 28, 2023.
Last March, the Romanian Gendarmerie fined Balázs Isak for organizing a Szekele Independence Day parade on March 10, 2023 in Marusvasareli. A fine of 1,000 lei (77,000 forints) was imposed for “holding a prohibited public event”, six days after the march. In their punishment report, the Gendarmerie stated that “Romanian laws prohibit the dissemination of ideas about territorial structuring and regional autonomy,” and even the desired regional autonomy based on ethnic criteria is labeled as chauvinism by the Gendarmerie.
In its main ruling of 28 December 2023, the court in Marosvasareli annulled the record of the fine and also ordered the gendarmerie to pay court costs of 300 lei, according to the ruling published by the President of the SZNT.
The court's decision is not final and can be appealed within 30 days. On March 10 last year, after a break of several years, SZNT once again organized Freedom Day in Szekele, which, according to the organization, was attended by between 1,500 and 2,000 people.
