US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday afternoon, as Israeli forces continued their military operations in the Gaza Strip, including the city of Rafah in the far south of the country.
Sullivan is expected to urge Israel to avoid launching a large-scale attack on Rafah, after the United States previously said it would halt certain arms shipments if Israel launched a major ground attack on the city.
However, an Israeli official told Reuters news agency that President Netanyahu and his senior advisors will try to convince Sullivan of the necessity of incursion into Rafah.
Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Gaza announced on Sunday that at least 20 people were killed and a number of others were injured in a missile attack on the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. The Israeli army said it was verifying the reports, adding that two soldiers were killed in fighting in the south on Saturday.
There have been talks in the past about a possible ceasefire, with little success, and Israel has also rejected the proposal for a general ceasefire, claiming that releasing bodies instead of hostages is unacceptable.
More than 35,456 people have died in Gaza since the conflict began, according to the Hamas-led Health Ministry in the Strip.
