Anne Neuberger, US Deputy National Security Advisor for Internet and New Technologies, held talks with her South Korean and Japanese counterparts in Washington last week. The presidential office said they agreed to hold quarterly meetings.
The office’s announcement revealed that the purpose of establishing the advisory group is to strengthen the three countries’ effective response capabilities to global cyber threats, including jointly combating the cyber activities of North Korea, which funds its programs related to nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction. .
The announcement came after the leaders of the three countries agreed at the Camp David summit in August to create a new tripartite working group on cyber threats in the North.
Sanctions-monitoring countries have accused North Korea of using cyberattacks to raise money for its nuclear and missile programs.
According to a United Nations report, Pyongyang intensified its theft of cryptocurrencies last year and used sophisticated techniques to steal more in 2022 than in any other year.
North Korea has denied allegations of hacking or other cyber attacks.
