Prince Harry took legal action over a Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) decision in February 2020 after he was told he would no longer have the “same level” of publicly funded protection in the UK – A. writes Telegraph.
Prince Harry appealed against the decision, but in February retired High Court judge Sir Peter Lane rejected that claim, concluding that RAVEC's approach was neither irrational nor procedurally unfair. Prince Harry has appealed against this.
Now the prince has lost his appeal against the decision of the Supreme Court, which rejected his appeal against the decision of the Executive Committee.
In his ruling on Monday, Sir Peter Lane said Prince Harry should pay the bulk of the Home Office's legal costs, but said the department had committed a “breach of the law” during the legal battle that “deserves punishment.” Accordingly, Prince Harry may file another appeal.
“This led to the case being argued largely on new grounds that were not subject to the usual licensing process,” the judge said.
The breaches arose out of a misunderstanding on the part of the defendant regarding the duty of disclosure, which this decision had to deal with at length, so it is right that the defendant's costs should be reduced by a modest but still significant amount.
Sir Peter Lane added.
