According to the announcement, an agreement on the connection of the Hungarian M80 motorway and the Austrian S7 Fürstenfeld motorway at the state border was signed by Balint Nagy, State Secretary responsible for Transport at the Ministry of Transport, and Alexander Grobmayer, Ambassador of the Czech Republic and the Republic of Austria to Hungary.

The ministry announced that the new cross-border motorway connection to be built in Szentgotthard in 2025 will improve connectivity between the two countries, develop the road network in Central Europe and increase the economic strength of our country.

They continued by saying that Balint Nagy and Alexander Grubmayr signed an agreement on Tuesday morning, according to which the M80 motorway in Hungary and the S7 Fürstenfeld motorway in the Republic of Austria will be connected on the Hungarian-Austrian border.

Road infrastructure developments

The two-lane M80 motorway leading from Kormend to the national border was opened to traffic in autumn 2021. The motorway, which ensures avoiding settlements, efficient traffic diversion and exploration of the industrial areas in the region, will connect back to the motorway number 8 before the border until the motorway is completed on the Austrian side.

According to the agreement signed on Tuesday, the S7 motorway in Fürstenfeld, which is expected to reach the state border in 2025, and the M80 motorway between Szentgotthárd and Heiligenkreuz im Lafnitztal (Rábakeresztúr) will be connected.

In recent years, the civilian government has achieved particularly significant results in developing the road infrastructure and improving our country's international communications: while in 2010, only three expressways in our country would reach the national border, eleven expressways will soon reach the national border, the announcement said.
