Cable manufacturer Leoni has decided to close one of its factories in Transylvania due to a “significant drop in orders,” economedia.ro wrote, citing a company statement.
About 200 people work at the Maroslodas factory. Upon hearing the news of the factory's closure, employees on Tuesday began a spontaneous protest march, even though the company's management offered them to continue working at the company's factories in Arad or Pisztrus.
According to the company's announcement, Leoni decided to close the Maroslodas plant due to a “significant decrease” in its orders.
Car manufacturers are forced to switch from gasoline and diesel engines to electric and hybrid engines, but subsidies for electric cars have been reduced in all European countries, which does not help sales.
Economedia.ro quoted Andre Russo, the company’s communications director.
German company Leoni, founded in 1917, is one of the world's leading cable manufacturers. The company group has been present in Romania since 2000. In June 2023, Leoni Wiring Systems Romania opened its 10th plant in Romania in Bileneje, Bihar Province. About 12,000 people work in these centers, as well as in the Leoni Shared Service Center, which operates in Cluj and provides human resources-related services to the entire company group. The company produces 23,500 types of products in Romania.
