The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) is sending out push notifications these days, many people have paid their vehicle tax in the wrong place.
Previously, it had to be paid to local governments for several decades, 60 percent of which flowed into the state budget. However, the government changed this rule citing the coronavirus pandemic and the state of emergency, and from January 1, 2021, NAV will receive the full amount.
Thus, local governments have fallen by a significant amount, with the central budget forecasting HUF 87 billion in operating revenue from car tax next year, 40 percent of which will be HUF 35 billion, which is the shortest amount for local governments.
Although the Automobile Tax Administration has also moved to the NAV, the payment deadlines remain unchanged, and the first installment had to be paid by March 15 – this year it has been pushed back to April 15 – and the second by September 15.
However, many continued to pay tax to municipalities in place of the NAV, despite receiving notifications of payment from the tax authorities. The NAV waited until the beginning of December, then wrote to those with a tax debt of at least 1,000 HUF on November 23.
Accordingly, the NAV sent new push notifications to 21,285 farmers and nearly 383,000 individuals, roughly 7.5 percent of the 5.4 million domestic car owners.
