Passed by both houses of the Texas legislature, a bill was signed in front of Governor Greg Abbott on Saturday that states that athletes in schools can only compete in sports that match their gender, MTI writes.
Texas is already the eighth member state in the United States to adopt similar regulations this year. Abbott already indicated in the spring that he would sign the law. To date, these proposals have been submitted by Republican representatives in 32 US states. The law regulates competition for transgender athletes through the end of high school. Valorei Swanson, Republican bill for the Texas bill, argued that transgender athletes have an unfair advantage over those who were actually born women.
We need to create a level playing field across the state
Political announced.
On the other hand, LGBT advocacy organizations say, there is “no evidence” that transgender athletes will stock biologically born athletes in the sports they start in. Ricardo Martinez, president of an organization called Equality Texas, said the law was nothing more than a “hateful targeted attack” on transgender people. Susan Broyles-Sockman of the American Civil Rights Association (ACLU), told CBS News that the proposal “would initiate discrimination against a vulnerable minority group of children.”
It’s exciting to have the opportunity to stand up for our daughters, granddaughters and all the Texas girls
Happy, however, is Governor Valore Swanson, who said the bill was only to protect girls.
Earlier, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Montana, Tennessee and West Virginia passed similar laws in the United States, and the governor of South Dakota organized the matter by decree. Idaho passed such a law last year, but its implementation has been suspended by a federal court. Another court ruled that an 11-year-old transgender girl in West Virginia should be allowed to participate in the school’s girls’ team selection.
