There is no reason to panic about the spread of monkeypox, according to the World Health Organization, despite the first confirmed strain of the disease's Clade Ib virus, also known as Mpox, appearing outside Africa.
Hans Kluge, the regional director of the United Nations organization, pointed out on Tuesday that the virus has been present in the European continent since its last appearance in 2022, specifically in the form of the Clyde 2 variant. He also said that about a hundred infected people are currently being recorded every week.
“Mpox is not another Covid, we know how to control monkeypox” – Kluge made the announcement at his press conference in Geneva, held via video link.
He pointed out that two years ago, the spread of the virus in Europe was curbed, among other things, through close monitoring of new infections, through the availability of a vaccine, and through the direct involvement of the most vulnerable social classes in preventive measures.
Because according to experts, this variant could cause a disease that is more contagious and dangerous than previously known diseases.
However, Hans Kluge has now confirmed that they know of only one imported case in Europe, and that the Klade II variant is still dominant on the continent.
