The researchers analyzed more than 1,500 conversations and recorded the participants’ reactions. The participants also had to rate, based on video recordings, who was more or less likable based on facial expressions. Those who moved their facial muscles more and communicated more expressively were more empathetic, because they were assumed to be so.

People who are more expressive are more successful at attracting partners, building relationships, and resolving conflicts.
According to the study, facial expressions have an adaptive function, enhancing social bonding and helping resolve conflicts.
The results are also relevant from the point of view of AI development, since more expressive AI can inspire greater confidence in itself.
