In the first two-thirds of the match in Prague, the foreign team dominated the match and scored six goals to establish a comfortable lead.
But in the third period, the opponent took advantage of the fact that the Canadian team defended more actively than before, and was able to equalize the score by scoring five goals out of nine shots – the last of which was 49 seconds before the end. Extra time then lasted just 15 seconds, with John Tavares scoring for Austria immediately after a throw-in.
By saving the match with a draw, the Austrian team achieved a historic achievement, as there has never been an example of a team overcoming a five-goal deficit in the final third. The Austrians achieved this achievement, but they were unable to win the match, so they scored only one point.
