On Wednesday, the European Commission unveiled its plan to regulate artificial intelligence (AI), the primary goal of which is to curb the use of high-risk apps.
MTI wrote, the committee considers that MI regulations that threaten people’s safety and livelihood constitute an unacceptable risk factor under the package of proposals it has submitted, which will be banned by the authority, and will impose heavy fines on companies that circumvent the ban. The commission also identifies high-risk technologies that threaten core values protected by European Union law, such as freedoms and the right to privacy. Examples
- Law enforcement and justice,
- When examining immigration applications,
- For surgical procedures,
- Recruitment
Used in certain applications, and biometric identification systems used in public places.
Programs in these categories are subject to strict requirements. According to the committee, the strict rules do not discourage technological innovation in Europe, but rather strengthen it through public-private partnerships and European Union funding of research networks.
The regulatory proposal outlines how to accelerate investment in AI to benefit post-coronavirus recovery and to encourage implementation of AI strategies in member states.
In addition to MI regulation, the proposal also covers safety hazards for mechanical engineering products. For the safety of the user, it will introduce classification rules for high risk machines and conformity assessment for highly modified machines.
The commission’s proposal must be approved by the European Parliament and the member states under the normal legislative procedure, after which the regulations will be directly applied throughout the European Union.
