The new WhatsApp Beta portal for Android 2.24.14.7 has leaked — and it looks like it will use a combination of user-submitted images, text requests, and Meta AI's Llama model to generate images.
The examples seem pretty typical of what AI generators produce, especially if one uses apps like Lensa AI or Snapchat's “Dreams” selfie feature.
According to a screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, users can “imagine themselves in any environment from the jungle to outer space.”
To create a custom avatar, WhatsApp users will need to “take a photo of themselves once” and then use Meta AI to generate images based on the user’s likeness in any environment.
The feature is said to be optional and users will have to manually enable it in WhatsApp settings before they can use it.
Reference images can be deleted at any time via Meta AI settings, according to WABetaInfo.
There's no word on when the new Imagine AI selfie feature will be generally available. WhatsApp is still rolling out Meta AI chatbot support, along with real-time AI image generation in general, to users in the US, so it may be a while before the new AI avatar feature launches.
