Social networks have had an increasing impact on our daily lives in recent years. The proportion of people involved in any branch of social media (creating a user profile, posting messages or other comments on Facebook, X, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, etc.) among EU citizens was 59 percent on average according to Eurostat. Regarding the proportion of EU individuals participating, Denmark was the country with the highest rate at 91 percent, followed by Cyprus (83 percent) and Hungary (81 percent).
France (44%), Germany (49%), and Italy (53%) recorded the lowest percentage of participation in social networks.
In 224 of the 273 EU regions, participation in social networks exceeded 50 percent. The highest rate was recorded in 5 Danish regions:
- Midtjylland: 93 percent;
- Hovedstaden – metropolitan area: 92 percent;
- Swedenmark: 90 percent;
- Nordjylland and Sealand: both 89 percent.
Other EU regions also use the Internet to a greater extent for social media, for example the three Hungarian regions,
Budapest (86 percent), central Hungary (85 percent), Pest (84 percent), and Flevoland in the Netherlands, also 84 percent.
The lowest rates, less than 40 percent, were recorded primarily in France and Germany. In France, Guyenne (22%), Martinique (29%), Guadeloupe (30%), Brittany (38%), Haute-Normande (39%) and the Bourgogne region (40%). In Germany, these were the regions of Saxony-Anhalt (35 percent), Brandenburg (36 percent), Thuringia (38 percent), and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (40 percent).
