Two electricity network distribution companies from the MVM Group are installing more than 89,000 new smart meters in their service area with a non-refundable EU grant of more than 5 billion Hungarian forints. At the press conference held in Budapest to present the project on Tuesday, Attila Steiner, State Secretary responsible for Energy and Climate Policy at the Ministry of Energy (ME), said that in the first phase a total of HUF 20 billion will be spent on the installation. Of the approximately 280,000 smart meters, MVM is also part of this program, MTI wrote.
The development is an important part of ensuring the operation of a competitive and reliable electricity network in Hungary and the ability to supply small and large consumers at affordable prices.

Karoly Matrai, CEO of MVM Group, emphasized that smart consumption meters increase the flexibility of the distribution network and security of supply, and allow more convenient and accurate measurements for consumers. The project is implemented by MVM Démász Áramhároszáti Kft and MVM Émász Áramhároszáti Kft in consortium with Digital Government Development and Project Management Kft.
Attila Steiner explained that they expect that by 2030, the demand for electricity in Hungary could increase by 40-50 percent, thus increasing the strategic importance of electricity networks, which must be prepared for.
Grid operation is now very different than it was a few years ago, as the number of renewable energy production facilities has increased significantly. He said the total installed solar capacity already stands at 6,000 MW, and if the sun is shining, Hungary, combined with the production of the Pakse nuclear power plant, could fully supply itself with electricity, but the grids must be able to deliver it. The State Minister highlighted the strengthening of networks and the fact that the operation of networks can be improved through data analysis.

Smart meters are gaining ground, with hundreds of thousands of smart meters already operating in Hungary, but it is important that these devices become more widespread. This is why the government is applying for the resources of the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility, Attila Steiner said.
The CEO of MVM Group explained that more information about electricity networks is available with smart meters, allowing them to intervene in operations more effectively if necessary, making the system more controllable and safer.
It is best to install smart meters in homes that have solar panels, because it is necessary to have the most accurate data on their production to be able to manage the networks optimally.
