'Insensitive' design of Assassin's Creed Shadows statue sparks fan outrage – as creators pull it

The maker of the Assassin's Creed Shadows collectible statue has announced that it is reworking the design of the one-legged torii portal after fans were outraged by its “insensitivity.” The gate bears a strong resemblance to one of the monuments of the atomic attack on Nagasaki.

the Shadows of Assassin's Creed The miniature manufacturer, which includes Yasuke and Naoi, has announced that it is “rethinking” the design of the collectible set after receiving comments about the original's “insensitive design.”

PureArts unveiled the statue in September, which at first glance seemed innocuous: Funko-esque figures of Yasuke and Naoe, Shadows of Assassin's Creed Its heroes, standing next to a partial torii gate.

However, it was quickly pointed out that the collector's torii gate closely resembled the single-legged torii gate in front of Sano Shrine, a remnant of the 1945 atomic attack on Nagasaki. Half of the torii leg remained intact even though it was less than One kilometer from the epicenter of the explosion. As you can imagine, this broken gate has great historical and cultural value.

Legitimate criticisms of the design were amplified on social media by players already angry about having a playable black male character in a fantasy action game set in feudal Japan; Legitimate concerns about careless handling of cultural sensitivities were followed by a broader and more vitriolic outcry targeting Ubisoft as a whole.

PureArts has now announced that the design will be changed. “We recently released an insensitive design.” – the company wrote in a message published on the X website. “Thank you. We have learned from your concerns, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

“After reading and processing the comments, we immediately went back to the drawing board and are currently rethinking the design of Assassin's Creed Shadows Yasuke & Naoe Qlectors. Stay tuned for more news!”

In a later post, PureArts added that existing pre-orders have not been canceled and that those who have already pre-ordered will receive an email soon with more information.
