Iran protests European Union sanctions through the Hungarian ambassador

October 15, 2024 – 7:50 pm

The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Ambassador of Hungary on Tuesday to protest the European Union sanctions imposed on the country on Monday. Reuters reports Based on Iranian official media reports. The Iranian Foreign Ministry decided in favor of the Hungarian ambassador due to Hungary's current presidency of the European Union.

An agreement was reached in the European Union on Monday to impose sanctions on seven individuals and seven organisations, including Iran Air. According to suspicion, these organizations could be linked to missile shipments from Iran to Russia, which were reported by the US National Security Council at the beginning of last September. In addition to the European Union and the United States, Great Britain also imposed new sanctions.

But Iran denies that it is supplying Russia with missiles. “Unfortunately, some European countries and the United Kingdom have claimed without evidence that Iran has intervened militarily in this conflict, which we completely deny,” Esmail Baghaei, spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, wrote on the X website. He added that imposing new sanctions on Iranian individuals and organizations contradicts international law.

IRNA also reported that the meeting, in addition to the protest, “helped underscore that resorting to illegal and coercive methods such as sanctions against Iran is unacceptable and will lead nowhere.”

The Iranian civil aviation spokesman announced that the national airline, Iran Air, will stop its flights to Europe, because it no longer obtains the necessary flight permits.

“We both see the current events in the world very similarly,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said after his meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezskian in Moscow last Friday. Russian President invited Bezeskiyan to visit Moscow at the beginning of last week, four days after Iran launched a missile attack on Israel. According to the Russian President, economic relations between Iran and Russia are improving, and Pezeshkian said that they are very close to signing a strategic agreement. The rapprochement between the two countries has accelerated in the past month, and it is in the interest of both countries to lift Western sanctions.
