In recent decades, the press has repeatedly reported on investment scams linked to brokerage firms and real estate cooperatives. Many of those who, because of this, looked suspiciously at such constructions and did not trust banks, would have thought: this could not happen in the post office. People who are mostly older and live in small towns, and who find it more difficult to adapt to the world of online banking, usually manage their finances at the post office and deposit their savings there, but after what happened at the post office in Győrósovínháza, they can no longer To be sure of this.
Based on current information, the case is the same Marky broker– And Attila Kulcsar-Character story, just in a very small way
– he told Question 24.hu Leventy ToothSenior Analyst at Bank360. We reported on the suspected criminal case on November 29, a week after the post office unexpectedly closed nearly 800 fervent settlements around Gyor. According to one of our sources, the savings of at least half a hundred local residents within the postal service there have disappeared, while others know that the number of victims is much higher. Several interviewees said the crime could have been committed as far back as 2016 – one knows of a shortfall of HUF 78 million, while another says the actual value of damages could reach HUF 100-150 million. It is likely a savings or financial product sold through the mail.
According to local residents, since the scandal broke out, no one has seen the woman who provides the local postal service. According to them, this person was not local, but lived elsewhere, but he not only ran the post office, but he also ran – with his family members – a local store. Residents were shocked by the incident. As they said, the postal service lady seemed to be in good financial standing, but they did not suspect her.
The postal partner in Győrsövényház closed on 21 November, meaning that fixed postal service was discontinued. Since then, mobile mail has been available from 8:50 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. In other words, Győrsősövényház residents have 20 minutes to take care of their postal affairs.
A 24.hu reporter visited Gyorsoviniház when the authorities at the local community center informed the victims who had arrived there. Security did not let our colleague in, but at the same time, almost everyone in the local area knew about the case. One of the victims waiting in front of the cultural center also confirmed that they had been informed that their money had disappeared. However, no one wanted to give details. One villager believes that many people fear that if they make a statement or file a report, they will not be compensated for their damages or will be compensated much later, as we wrote at the time.
We asked Magyar Posta Zrt the questions that everyone who entrusts their money to the post office is likely to ask. We were interested in: Based on the internal investigation, apart from the person providing the local postal service mentioned in our previous article, was the liability of other postal workers, managers, and contractual partners raised in the case, and were there any labor law, disciplinary procedures, or changes? In addition to the report staff? We also asked: Can they confirm our information that the above suspected criminal activity has been ongoing since 2016? Furthermore, what is the exact value of the damages, how many victims, and when can they be compensated?
However, the most important question is what measures and changes are planned at the post office to prevent similar situations from occurring. Also, when have inspections been carried out at the post office in Győsovíniház in recent years, and what were the results?
Magyar Posta launched an internal investigation into the matter and contacted all potential stakeholders. The investigation is ongoing, and the report has been submitted. We ask customers to be patient until the investigations are completed
Magyar Posta Zrt responded to our paper.
We also asked about customer safety. We were wondering if Magyar Posta has an electronic system or interface (similar to parcel tracking) that exists in the personal database of banks, insurance companies, tax authorities or health insurance customers’ gatekeepers. In the case of securities purchased at the post office, savings managed there, and financial structures, the customer can log in online with a password to check whether the money has already been transferred, debited or paid, and whether the contract or transaction has been registered in the system? In other words, is your money safe, and did it go where it was intended? Specifically, we asked: Do Győrssévényháza clients allegedly exposed to damages have the technical and electronic means to do so?
Magyar Posta serves its customers at the highest level. Police action has begun in this case, so we cannot share further details in light of this
The answer came, which did not give an objective answer to the question. But then how do we imagine such a crime? – We turned to the expert.
Leventi Toth told 24.hu that compared to the supposed financial capabilities of the victims, two ways can be assumed to commit such a large amount of fraud.
The first is that everything was done outside of official postal records. So this money never even entered the treasury system, and was never paid anywhere by the perpetrator, who took advantage of the victims’ lack of financial knowledge and the fact that they trusted him. In this case, he issued fraudulent or fraudulent certificates that led victims to believe that their money was in the right place, and that he had actually placed it in the investments he said he would make.
– said the expert.
Our local source also talked about a similar scam. He knows that the victims received some sort of receipt, which would appear real to the average person, for the money they gave the perpetrator. According to him, the alleged perpetrator also paid all the interest and royalties to some clients, which created the impression that everything was fine. The expert believes that the fraud could have been carried out online.
Another possibility is that the victims trusted him so much that they gave him access to the Internet. In this case, you may be transferring their money on their behalf without their knowledge
“But we can’t say anything about this unless we know, specifically, what the investments were and how the fraud happened,” believes Leventi Toth, who of course cannot rule out the possibility that there was an error in the post office’s registration and monitoring system, which made the fraud possible.
We also asked the Post Office how much compensation victims could expect in addition to the amount stolen from them. We did not receive an answer to that, but at the same time our source informed that the victims would only be compensated for the amounts paid, as well as any interest and returns on them, and they would not receive compensation due to inconvenience or fear. . According to him, several victims filed a police report after he reported it to the post office.
We also asked the police about this matter, and they replied:
Based on the complaint of Magyar Posta Zrt., the Gyor-Moson-Sopron District Police Headquarters is conducting criminal proceedings regarding the crime of fraud. No further information regarding the investigation can be provided at this time.
We searched again for the woman who had been providing the postal service until the case came to light, and who has since disappeared from the settlement, using contact information known to the villagers, but were unable to speak to her.
