“It was already raining during the warm-up – said the Hungarian judge when asked by Nemzeti Sport. – But the sky really fell during the chants. After consulting with my assistants Albert Istvan and Vinciel Toth II, I interrupted the match in the sixth minute after the Scots’ first goal, hoping that the match would be suitable to continue due to the drainage under the grass carpet. The Georgians weren’t really happy about the wait, but the organizers did everything they could to get the field in order. Thirty or so field workers tried to remove the precipitation by various means, and as time passed, it became more and more clear that the game would be able to continue. In short, we and the managers were sure that the teams would play if possible, not to mention that the 50,000 people who had bought Hampden Park tickets also lobbied for it to go on. Only the Georgians were hesitant, although they had already organized a return trip after the match. However, except for the weather, nothing else interfered with our operation. After waiting for an hour and a half, we started again, and the meeting ended without any problems.”
