Australia is locked in a huge battle with the Covid-19 epidemic, which is fueled by an omicron of the coronavirus. More people are ending up in more than just a hospital and intensive care unit than ever before during a pandemic.
According to official figures, 77 deaths were recorded, surpassing the highest national level last Thursday, which was 57.
“Today is a very difficult day for our state,” New South Wales Premier Dominic Beirut told a news conference, reporting 36 deaths in the region, a new peak. Only four of those who died in the state received a booster dose, prompting state health officials to urge people not to delay giving the booster medication and to take the third dose as soon as possible.
“There is an urgent need to manage stimulant doses,” said Kerry Chant, NSW Director-General of Health. “For the Omicron, we know the protection is lower, so we need reinforcements,” according to Reuters
The authorities consider the majority of patients in the intensive care unit to be infected with the Omicron strain,
The number of unvaccinated young people is also large.
In Queensland, none of the 16 deaths recorded on Tuesday received a booster dose. Of the 45 people who have died in the state since December 13 from Covid-19, only one has received the third dose.
About 73,000 new infections were reported on Tuesday, up from 150,000 last Thursday. Australia has reported about 1.6 million infections so far since the outbreak began, with about 1.3 million infections in the past two weeks. The total number of deaths was 2776.
