Yuki Tsunoda’s career in Mexico could have ended with a solid run of points, but his error in Japan left him with a zero last weekend. The pilot was severely hurt by the missed opportunity.
AlphaTauri finally showed good pace over the weekend at the Mexico City Grand Prix, but Yuki Tsunoda was unable to capitalize on the team’s positive momentum. After several attempts, he failed to pass McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who was driving in seventh place, and after a very optimistic attempt, the Japanese collided with the Australian and went off the track. With this, he lost hope of scoring points and finally finished in twelfth place. At the pre-race press conference in Brazil, the Japanese young man spoke about how his mistake affected him.
“I had had a good race up until then, so after the mistake I was very frustrated and it was difficult to take that frustration in the whole day. You generally feel good in Mexico. I canceled all the programs and locked myself in my room. It could have been a big moment, and the opportunity was there.” …And it could have been fifth,” Tsunoda was quoted as saying.
After the incident, the Japanese realized that he should have been more patient in this situation, and that he still needed to improve his management of the situation, however, the refusal of stable registration still had a strong impact on his conscience.
“I feel guilty. I don’t know if it’s a conscious thing, but I always feel bad about having fun and trying to distract myself after a bad race. Maybe this is just a good thing for me, temporarily. I thought about everything, where I can improve in the future. It was hard Obviously, but I had time to think about it again, which I always do after a bad race. “I only celebrate when I do well,” the AlphaTauri pilot said.
Former Minardi F1 team boss Paul Stoddart criticized Tsunoda after the race in Mexico. The Japanese mistake could have been particularly painful because coupled with Daniel Ricciardo’s seventh valid points, AlphaTauri could have been dangerous even for Williams in the constructors’ points standings. Currently, there are twelve units separating the two teams.
