Joy Drop: It’s been a great week for women in the sports scene

Friends, as we move through the world, it is important to recognize the coexistence of horrors around the world while we find happiness and moments of joy.

Last weekend, Gotham FC won the NWSL Championship. It’s been an interesting season, but one of the coolest things I’ve seen was a league fan create a quilt (yes – a quilt!) based on the season and its colors. Allison Gill is an engineer by profession but loves quilting and soccer. So why don’t we combine them?

This week I saw posts about Indigenous heritage celebrations at the Toronto Raptors game on Wednesday. I love the fact that even though it’s not September, we can still amplify Indigenous culture. Theland Kicknosway used his powerful voice and played along with his hand drum. I wasn’t there but heard from many people that it was incredible. My husband, Mark, was there and said the entire arena absorbed the melodic story of this man’s lived experience.

Additionally, the Take The TTC and Toronto Raptors campaign featured eight Indigenous athletes and athletes with disabilities who will be featured on buses and street cars. It is a great initiative and I hope it continues to be promoted and cherished for Indigenous and Paralian athletes.

A first for Canada! Leila Fernandez, Marina Stakosek, Gabriella Dabrowski, Rebecca Marino, Eugenie Bouchard and leader Heidi El Tabakh won the award. Billie Jean King Cup In Seville, Spain. This tournament is very important. A record 134 countries participated in the Billie Jean King Cup, making it the world’s largest annual international team competition in women’s sports.

The PWHL showed off the team’s jerseys this week. There’s been a lot of criticism from fans about the design (when is there not criticism?) but I like the simplicity of the shirts and the clean look. I can’t wait for the league to start. Training camps have begun and these amazing women are ready to go.

This weekend is the Canadian Sports Film Festival and I highly encourage everyone to attend. As you know, it’s my favorite film festival of the year. Unfortunately, I will be out of town but I will definitely be purchasing a digital ticket, which is a great option for those who can’t attend in person.

I have been spending all my time with my family and chosen family. Here is a recent photo with Dr. Sabrina Razak and Lisa Feeley that makes me so happy. Two amazing women doing amazing work in the sports scene. Also, I think we look great! The fits are on point.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and are in the company of your loved ones.
